If you represent a non-profit organization, a research institution, a college or university, a local governing body or a state, or if you’re working with a large private contractor, then the federal government has lots and lots of money available for you.
If you’re none of those things, and you’re looking for federal "grants" that you can use for financial assistance, there is no such thing. The reason those supposed "services" charge you fees is because they’re running a scam. Some will send you impressive looking packets of information that you could have had for free, and others will send you really bad, blurry copies of hard-to-read papers, and still others will send you absolutely nothing.
All of those websites, all of those guides, all of those late night commercials – they’re all fake – every one of them.
The federal government offers ONE type of large-scale grant program for individuals – the handful of programs that are part of the federal student aid program. To qualify, you must be an American citizen or eligible non-citizen, and you must be registered as a degree-seeking student at an eligible institution of post-secondary education. Before you can receive any such grant, the Department of Education will verify your enrollment at an eligible school – and the grant funds will be paid directly to the school, in your name.
If that’s the program that you are interested in – financial aid that must be used for college and university educational expenses, you should visit http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
Otherwise, I recommend that you spend some time at the federal government’s grant site – http://grants.gov/
Look around and you’ll find this warning:
"ATTENTION! Grants.gov does not offer money for personal financial assistance or debt. If you are seeking personal financial assistance such as:
Social Security/Supplemental Security Income, Medicaid or State Social Services, please visit: http://www.GovBenefits.gov
Student Loans, please visit: http://www.Studentaid.ed.gov
Small Business Start-up Loans, please visit: http://www.sba.gov
This type of individual assistance is NOT available on this website.
We have all seen them, late night infomercials, websites, and reference guides, advertising "millions in free money" Don’t believe the hype! Although there are many grants on Grants.gov, few of them are available to individuals and none of them are available for personal financial assistance. To find an alphabetical listing of federal personal assistance visit USA.gov website’s Government Benefits, Grants, and Financial Aid page."
Save your money – they are all scams. Despite what the crooks tell you, in order to entice you into parting with your money – the federal government does NOT give away "free money" to individuals.
I hope that helps. Good luck!
And that site requires you to fill out your personal info and then they use that to contact you and send you junk mail and advertising phone calls.
Some places will send you a cd and help about getting grants… try here

or hit up google and look for .gov sites.
You will not be able to find anything directly from the federal government. Programs for individuals are generally available through cities, and the programs vary by city. Go to your city website and look for the department of housing, community development, health & human resources, etc. They post all the information on available programs, income level qualifications and contact information.
